National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Sammy Awuku says the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is scared of the youth in Ghana, claiming this is why the party doesn't support an extension of the limited registration.
The New Patriotic Party has been calling for an extension of the deadline for the limited registration due to the inability of a section of the Ghanaian youth to participate in the exercise.
Some youths were unable to have their names in the voters' register for the November 7 polls this year.
This has become a contentious issue between the ruling party and the opposition party, with the opposition NPP calling on the Electoral Commission to make provision for those unregistered youth to be able to register and vote in the 2016 general elections.
However, members of the ruling party insist on the EC not to extend the limited registration which ended on Sunday.
To Sammy Awuku, whether the youth will vote for a particular party or not depends on the performance, vision and capabilities of the party.
"...if you can turn the fortunes around in six months and they’ll vote for you, they will vote for you but don’t put an impediment between those who want their names captured in the register; between them and their desire for change.”
Explaining further the need for an extension of the limited registration, Sammy Awuku noted that a case study of the University of Ghana, Legon, indicated that thousands of the students couldn't register their names because there was only one registration centre at the campus.
He said the arrangements by the Electoral Commission (EC) on the campus didn't make room for all the students to be part of the registration process.
Speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, Sammy Awuku wondered why the NDC is bent on not extending the limited registration, because to him, providing an opportunity for the youth doesn't guarantee votes for the NPP, NDC or any other political party.
“All of a sudden, they are afraid of the youth. All of a sudden, they have aversion towards the youth. Meaning when they hear that the youth are massing up and grouping to demand for their legitimate thing, then the government is gripped by fear…Why are the NDC, scared that when the youth come out in their numbers to vote on November 7; President Mahama will be a goner?” |
