The opposition New Patriotic Party’s National Chairman, Jake Obetsebi lamptey, says his party is committed to ensuring a free and fair election in 2012 and therefore will not condone any act of violence during the elections.
President John Mills yesterday served notice that his government will not countenance any form of violence in the 2012 general elections in reaction to NPP’S flag bearer, Nana Akufo Addo’s charge to the Electoral Commission to conduct credible elections in 2012, failure of which the possibility of violent elections.
But President Mills told journalists in Accra Nana Addo’s comments were in bad state.
Jake Obetsebi Lamptey who spoke to Abena Asiedua on Xfm's Morning show "Big bite" supported that the Electoral Commission (EC) conducts an electronic verification which according to him will make the biometric registration credible.
He believed the electronic verification is the surest way to ensure that eligible electorates vote once and also clear off any double registration. "The Biometric register and verification stroke authentication is a major step in improving our whole electoral process", he prompted.
He expressed his party's support for the electronic verification and charged the Electoral Commission to mobilize the necessary funds to make the process a successful one. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey intimated that the EC lacks financial support for the verification system and urged the government to provide money for the commission to carry out the verification process.
Responding to comments by the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who stressed that the NDC is not committed to the electronic verification system, the NPP National Chairman explained that this process when successfully conducted will promote a transparent and fair election 2012; wondering why the NDC will kick against the system.
He added that any act of boycotting the verification process will call for a complete abrogation of the whole biometric registration.
