Prez Mahama Isn't Noted For Tribalism . . . He Wasn't Bred Like That - Fred Agbenyo

Deputy Communications Director of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Fred Agbenyo has debunked claims that President John Dramani Mahama is ethnocentric and delivering divisive campaign messages.

The President, while addressing party supporters in Lawra as part of his campaign tour of the Northern Region, made comments suggesting that the NPP only "uses northerners" to win power and afterwards "dump" them.

President John Mahama reportedly expressed sorrow over Northerners calling for change.

“Sometimes I feel sad when I see some of our Northern brothers running around and also doing this (the change sign), they will use you and dump you.”

Addressing the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Fred Agbenyo defended the President's statements stating that every candidate runs about to negotiate and canvass votes from the electorates.

The candidates therefore make statements to win the hearts of the people, he purported.

To Fred Agbenyo, it is the opposition New Patriotic Party that is noted for making tribal and divisive comments.

He quoted the NPP's Minority leader, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and former Finance Minister under the erstwhile Kufour regime, Yaw Osafo-Marfo to have made statements to suggest that Ga people and some clans are not qualified to lead the NPP.

“We go there and negotiate with the people. And tell them why we think we’re the best. And why they must accept us and vote for us. In a democracy, people go behind the scenes . . . If Nana Addo can go and stand at Volta Region and tell the Voltarians that we cast our votes one-way and so we should stop that voting pattern, why doesn’t the same person go to Kumasi to say you also vote one-way and so you should also stop voting in that manner?”

Fred Agbenyo therefore discounted the claims about President Mahama stating emphatically that the President is well-bred by his family and not noted for being tribal.

“President Mahama is not noted for that. He’s not like that. He wasn’t bred like that.”
