The Ministry of Education has dubunked media reports that 150 school children in Ghana collapsed during the 56th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday.
Paul Krampah, the Public Relations Director of the Education Ministry speaking to Peacefmonline.com, denied knowledge of any incident where huge numbers of students fainted on the anniversary day due to fatigue resulting from the hot weather.
A publication by the Chronicle newspaper on Thursday, March 07, 2013 revealed that about 150 students from Senior High, Junior High and Primary schools lost consciousness at the independence celebration.
The report disclosed that; “the number was made up of 50 from Koforidua, capital of the Eastern Region, and 100 from the East Akyem Municipality.”
But Mr. Krampah explained that it is unlikely for the school children to lose consciousness since they hold series of rehearsals months before the celebration day in order to gain stamina.
“What normally goes on is that. There’s a selection of students, the selection is done at the district level. They don’t select children in lower primary. Normally, those in the Upper primary participate in the march pass…They practice this over the month before the actual day comes,” he explained.
He further noted that the students are not paraded for long hours, to check the possibility of such incidents.
He therefore took with a pinch of salt such numbers reported in the media stating that; “We are not aware of anything like that. If we are celebrating our national day and children participate in the celebration, what is wrong with that? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that; [I mean] they are children. They have to participate.”
