NPP Must Be Dragged To Supreme Court For Contempt of Court

A National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communicator, Peter Boamah Otukonor has cited members of the New Patriotic Party for contempt of court and therefore called for them to be arraigned before the Supreme Court.

He disclosed that the actions and inactions of the opposition party members, particularly the minority caucus, show that they do not uphold the decision of the court.

He argued in an interview with Peacefmonline.com that the swearing-in of President John Mahama to commence his official duties was administered by Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood under the auspices of the Supreme Court, for that matter challenging the President’s legitimacy amounts to pre-judgement which is enough grounds for them to be in contempt of court.

He was surprised that the NPP loyalists have been left off the hook after they have passed their own judgement even before the court ruling.

“The NPP boycotted the swearing-in of the President, that was when the case was in court. So, how can you say that you recognize the legitimacy of the President, yet you boycott the swearing-in of the President and say that he’s illegitimate? How can you in one breath say that you recognize the legitimacy of the President, yet you’ll boycott State of the Nation Address on the grounds that he’s illegitimate? How can you boycott the President’s nominee to Parliament or ministerial position [the vetting, you boycott it] and still claim that the President is legitimate when indeed you have boycotted on the grounds that he’s illegitimate?

“It is just obvious that you will wait for the Judiciary to pass judgement but when you start passing your judgement, then it amounts to contempt of court. I am even surprised that the court so far has not held the NPP in contempt because clearly all their actions, their comments and behaviour; it’s a clear contempt of court…They are running amok in contempt of court,” he said.

According to him, the conduct of the NPP members is contrary to their case in court, revealing that the NPP has a “track record of non-participation, non-cooperatin and a destructive form of politics.”
