Ashanti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sam Payne has debunked ideas streaming from a section of political divide and on the airwaves that the party's pro-feminine agenda approach will have dire consequences on the party.
Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Sam Payne noted that the pro-feminine approach is an affirmative measure established by the party leadership to encourage more women leaders in the country.
According to him, the approach is a major catalyst for women empowerment and will help ginger up a large number of women contesting for political positions.
The National Executive Council of the party met to fix a date for the Parliamentary Primaries for the party and has adopted a proposal for only female aspirants to contest the 16 female Members of Parliament in their respective constituencies.
Consequently, the party has agreed that coastal constituencies in the Greater Accra Region such as Ngleshie Amanfrom, Ablekuma South, Odododiodio, Korle Klottey, La Dade Kotopon, Ledzokuku, Krowor among others; should be contested by Ga indigenes.
Though political figures like NDC Deputy Communications Director Fred Agbenyo have expressed a tinge of despondency in the NPP's initiative, Sam Payne is hopeful the decision will strengthen the democratic structures in the party and so, give women a fair representation in law-making body.
This notwithstanding, Renowned Pollster Ben Ephson believes the party's decision will prepare grounds for them to lose more seats in Parliament.
"When it comes to other aspect that if you are not indigenes in those constituencies you should not contest, if the person contest the indigenes as independent candidate, you will lose the seat….I don’t know but maybe they want to remain in opposition; they have put in place a mechanism which will make them lose….this is a recipe for total disaster,” he asserted. |
