Sammy Awuku says the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) flagbearer's petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in connection with the Nigerian President, Sani Abacha's gift controversy to Former President Rawlings is a mere attempt to run down the former President.
According to the National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Lartey's petition is a well-orchestrated attack on the personality of Mr. Rawlings.
He was of a strong view that it is the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) which is the mastermind behind the petition.
Speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, Sammy Awuku believed the NDC wants to gag their Founding leader and ensure that they sideline him in the political arena.
The NPP National Youth Organizer further alluded to other attacks by the NDC to tarnish the reputation of the Mr. Rawlings.
He cited African Watch's report that the former President has "Parkinson" disease coupled with some other false stories about Mr. Rawlings as some of the methods that the NDC is using to silence their founder.
Sammy Awuku wondered why Dr. Lartey would dig up a buried story about the former President and would now petition CHRAJ and EOCO.
He asked what gains that the GCPP flagbearer would derive from reviving such issue; "is it for Ghana Library to keep?”
“I can’t think far on this matter. How this petition can improve upon the fortunes of Henry Lartey…It is part of the government’s strategy and design of the ruling party – propaganda machinery", he added.
