PPP Communicator, Nana Ofori Owusu has asked President Nana Akufo-Addo and his government to ensure that their free SHS policy inure to the benefit of Ghanaians.
According to him, the initiative should be Ghanaian-biased so as to create jobs for the citizenry.
Nana Ofori Owusu, who welcomed the President's initiative, noted that though it is relevant to have free education in the country; it is equally important for the implementers of the policy to employ the services of Ghanaians.
He cited that foods that will be served in various schools should be localized and contracted to Ghanaian farmers to revamp the agricultural sector.
He also added that there should be incentives for teachers to make the free education policy enticing in order to encourage more Ghanaians to embrace the project.
The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that the government “Will fund the cost of public Senior High Schools for all those who qualify for entry from the 2017/2018 academic year onwards.”
Delivering a speech at the 60th Anniversary celebration of Okuapeman school, President Akufo-Addo explained that “By free SHS, we mean that, in addition to tuition which is already free, there will be no admission fees, no library fees, no science centre fees, no computer lab fees, no examination fees, no utility fees; there will be free textbooks, free boarding and free meals, and day students will get a meal at school for free.”
Speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme, Nana Ofori Owusu advised that implementation of the project "must be skewed and it must be biased towards Ghanaians, making sure that we support Ghanaian industries especially Ghanaian farmers.”
