Works and Housing Minister Assures Rent Control Department Of Support

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda has assured the Rent Control Department of his outfit’s commitment to equip them with adequate resources to boost their activities.

Speaking to Radio Gold, the Minister said his Ministry will make the necessary interventions to resource the Rent Control Department so as to help them resolve the rent challenges in the country.

It could be recalled that the Chief Rent Officer of the Rent Control Department, Mr. Addo Dombo made an appeal to government to assist them with the some logistics and resources to streamline their operations.

He called on government to direct its attention to the Rent Control Department which is in shambles.

Recounting the ordeal of the Department, he revealed that he uses his private vehicle to undertake official duties, explaining that he has “a 7-year old rickety pick-up which is boarded off. I don’t have a vehicle that is functional. I use my own private vehicle for duties and to claim fuel too is dificult to come by. The budget allocation given to Department is nothing to talk about. Even what is given to us has not been released. We don’t get it. So, it is true that my contractors are on my neck. Some of them are even threatening sueing the department for non-payment of works that they have done. We don’t have computers.”

Also, the National Tenants Association of Ghana (NATAG) in view of the challenges facing the Rent Control Department called for its dissolution or otherwise a reshuffle of the authorities.

However, the Works and Housing Ministry under the leadership of Hon. Alhaji Collins Dauda says it is “trying to put some interventions together to support this sector…we’re doing our best to fix the problems…The sector is a critical sector as far as the Ministry is concerned and therefore, we will do our best to put in maximum effort to ensure that we address some of the challenges.”

In the meantime, the Ministry is very concerned with building affordable housing units to resolve the accommodation challenges confronting the nation.
