US$250m Saga: There's Need For An Inquiry...We Demand Answers To Specifics!

Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, has called for a Parliamentary inquiry into Government of Ghana’s engagement with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) and the claims by Dr. Bawumia, Running Mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Running Mate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has accused the government of diverting $250 million of the 2014 Eurobond cash to a private bank for election purposes.

He further noted that the government has returned to borrow the money through treasury bills and with interest.

Following Dr. Bawumia’s claims, government hit back with a rejoinder stating categorically that Dr. Bawumia’s statement is "factually wrong and technically deficient".

Seth Terkper, the Finance Minister who signed the statement accused Dr. Bawumia of giving a wrong impression to Ghanaians and international investors and development partners.

Reiterating that moving out the funds to a commercial bank was the best decision government took considering the money was lying in the Central Bank account without any interest, he revealed that government made a profit of $23 million when it transferred the money.

Hours after government's response, the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana fired back saying he has been vindicated and called for the Finance Minister's resignation.

Addressing the issue on PeaceFM's Kokrokoo Show Wednesday, Kweku Baako held strongly that a bi-partisan inquiry will help clarify issues relating to government’s diversion of the funds.

According to him, the government may have reasons for transferring $250 million of the Eurobond to a UBA account, and Ghanaians need to be in the know.

Similarly, he argued, the UBA must have shown its strength in handling such amount of money, which to him, is quite substantial.

Kweku Baako also questioned the relationship that UBA has with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) which for that matter had to receive the 250 million dollars by the Government of Ghana.

To Mr. Baako, he is “inclined to believe that there’s a need for inquiry. Not necessarily big time Presidential inquiry or what. Parliamentary inquiry will be okay but some forum that we will get answers to specifics…What is the kind of arrangement between Ghana Infrastructure Investment Bank and UBA relative to this money?
