Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko says government should set up a fund in honour of the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Martin Amidu who resolutely fought for the refund of some monies paid as judgment debt to construction firm, Waterville Holdings Ltd.
The former Attorney General who calls himself “Citizen Vigilante” on Friday triumphed in court over his suit against the company and two others, businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome and Austro-Invest Limited to recoup huge sums he claimed were illegally paid to the respondents.
Austro-Invest was later struck out of the suit after being realized that the company was liquidated in Switzerland on July 26, 2011.
The Supreme Court on Friday ordered Waterville Holdings to refund all monies paid it in excess of €40 million in the judgment debt scandal to the Government of Ghana.
A nine-member Bench presided over by Justice Professor Date-Baah unanimously ruled that the company was undeserving of the payments.
The court also referred lawyers for the construction firm and Alfred Agbesi Woyome to the General Legal Council for disciplinary action to be taken against them for failing to do due diligence in their clients’ cases.
Speaking to the issue on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” on Monday, the NPP MP told host Kwame Sefa Kayi that a fund should be established to support the efforts of other “citizen vigilantes”.
According to him, the fund which should be known as “Martin Amidu” fund should aim at providing financial assistance to people whose interest is to unearth the truth and ensure that the country doesn’t run into debts.
“People like this need our support…I congratulate him. Let’s all mobilize resources and money so that when somebody is championing a course like this; it won’t be his burden,” he said.
