The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku has condemned attacks on journalists in the line of duty by some members of the public including state institutions.
Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Sammy Awuku decried the instant justice that a section of the Ghanaian populace have recently been meting out to media practitioners in the nation.
According to him, such actions do not augur well for the country's image and should therefore not be encouraged by anyone.
He recounted the risk taken by journalists to disseminate information or relay news items to the general public, saying the role of the journalist in the society cannot be underestimated.
To him, media practitioners sometimes render services to the nation at the peril of their lives and rebuked attempts by people to leave a "scar" on the skin of any journalist.
“We need to understand that media practitioners can sometimes be very provocative...by the nature of their job, they've been trained not to be provocative. Because he or she can put you in an uncomfortable position by the sort of questions they ask...but nowhere do I think that your answer to a media person’s question should leave a scar on his or her skin…In the past few years, media men and women; they've been attacked left, right, center," he said.
“…I stand shoulder to shoulder with the Journalists Association, the Media Commission and Writers Association including their owners and reporters. They are going through a lot…It took the work of a journalist [courage] such as Manasseh Azure to uncover GYEEDA".
In his conviction, journalists in the country haven't been treated fairly since they contribute immensely to the growth of the economy.
“Instead of bastardizing and beating them, we should try and help them that when they are going off track; we find a way to address it,” he advised. |
