Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Editor-in-Chief of the Insight newspaper, has described the Member of Parliament (MP) for Daboya/Makarigu, Nelson Abudu Baani as "uncivilized" for proposing that adulterous women should be hanged and stoned.
Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. stressed that the MP's comments were distasteful considering the caliber of women in the nation and the diverse cultures in the world.
The Parliamentarian proffered that the punishment that should be given to adulterous women should be hanging or stoning.
"Day in day out in Afghanistan, if you go behind your husband they hang you. So if they add that, we will get very genuine women in families...I want members at this time to reject it [Bill]. This thing will bring a lot of controversy in my area. Some of these women are 'alomo jarta' in their houses so if a woman that I am married to brings me a bastard what is the [punishiment] for those types of women. Unless punishment for women who are not faithful is added, we should not adopt it," Hon. Abudu Baani.
He recounted that the MP should have weighed his words, knowing very well the cultural differences in the nation and beyond.
“In today’s world, looking at how it is advancing and if you can boldly go and stand in Parliament to say that we should stone ladies, then you must be much uncivilized. What about the men who also commit adultery?”
Kwesi Pratt Jnr. also blamed constituents for failing to somehow diagnose the minds of the personalities they vote for, to represent them in Parliament.
In his view, Members of Parliament should be critically scrutinized before they are given the nod into the Legislative House.
“We do not ask about the mental faculty of the person. We just vote for the person," he said. |
