The National First Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Ofosu Ampofo has defended his party's argument for the old voters' register to be maintained.
The rank and file of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has discounted calls by the minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) for a new voters' register to check electoral malpractices in the country.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Mr. Ofosu Ampofo told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that a new voters' register will not remedy the electoral challenges confronting Ghanaian electorates.
According to him, what political parties must request is an exhibition of the voters' register.
This is because, to him, the exhibition of the register will provide opportunity for the parties to highlight allegations leveled against the Electoral Commission (EC).
He insisted that names of minors and unknown identities illegally registered should be expunged from the register but only when it is exhibited by the EC.
“The electoral register will be exhibited before any major election comes up again. If you have evidence that someone is a Togolese, go and point out. Go and challenge the person for his or her name to be removed… I think the only thing we can do to the current register is to continuously subject it to the cleaning process.”
“It is not necessarily for any person to propose that a register which has not lasted for four years; we’re just about three years into the time that the register was made, should be abandoned for a new one...Let us be careful that we don’t bastardize State institutions or else we will have problems in dealing with the situation that we have on our hands.” |
