All Social Inteventions By The NPP Were Political Gimmicks... - Fred Agbenyo

Deputy Communications Director of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo has rubbished all the social intervention policies rolled out by the erstwhile John Agyekum Kufuor-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

According to Fred Agbenyo, the NPP's social interventions were in reality not feasible and the party's aim was to deceive the Ghanaian citizenry.

Before Mr Kufuor's tenure ended, his administration initiated the National Health Insurance Scheme, National Youth Employment Programme, Free Maternity HealthCare, the School Feeding Programme and other projects, aimed at relieving the plight of Ghanaians.

But the NDC Deputy Communications Director, Fred Agbenyo, contributing to a panel discussion on PeaceFM's "Kokrokoo" Morning Show, strongly discounted and discredited the claims.

Elaborating further on the issue, Mr. Agbenyo insisted that the policies were mere political gimmicks and implemented to score political points.

He added that all the afore-mentioned social intervention policies were unsustainable and the projects would have been a white elephant if the NDC had not put in place mechanisms to sustain them after winning power in 2008.

“All the social interventions that were introduced by the NPP were just for political gimmick, just to win political vote. They didn’t mean it. They didn’t understand it. All of it would have collapsed if we had not come to power....Go and read what Dr Addo Kufuor said about the National Health Insurance Scheme and you'll understand my point...even when they rolled the policy (NHIS), it was a Mutual Scheme; it couldn't be accessed when one moved from the district where he or she registered to another district...Even the School Feeding Prog was being financed by the Dutch government and there was nothing in place to sustain it if the Dutch government withdrew its support...It is not in their philosophy to provide social interventions!!!” Fred Agbenyo charged.

He noted that the NPP rather duplicated the policies laid down by the NDC and implemented them for Ghanaians to somehow sing their praises.
