Use Biogas, Solar & Wind To Power The Nation - Kwesi Pratt Tells Gov't

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt has proposed that the Government of Ghana adopts new strategies to resolve the erratic power supply in the country.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme, Kwesi Pratt called on the energy authorities to use biogas, solar and the wind to complement Ghana's hydroelectric power and crude oil needed to generate electricity for communities across the nation.

According to him, it is about time energy providers begun to utilize these avenues to increase power supply.

Reacting to the power shortages, Kwesi Pratt ascribed the problem to the lack of adequate funds to purchase crude oil and also for maintenance of the thermal plants.

He noted that energy providers like the Volta River Authority have already incurred huge debts and the Government of Ghana also doesn't have enough money to help in the generation and supply of power to the citizenry.

In view of this, Kwesi Pratt wondered why over the years, the nation lags behind when other countries have advanced in the technology to supply electricity to their citizens.

He therefore wants Ghana not over-rely on its traditional ways of supplying power but rather put into the sun and wind into good use to resolve the life-threatening blackouts that have characterized the nation.

“To be able to solve the energy crises, you need to have a proper understanding of the geography of the country. Proper mapping, energy mapping and so on; they’re all crucial to finding a solution to the problem and so on. So we need to do all of that; biogas and so on, solar, wind…” he stated.
