Kwesi Pratt Bemoans Treatment Meted Out To Public Servants

A member of the Socialist forum and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. on “Kokrokoo” Tuesday bemoaned the treatment meted out to public sector workers by State authorities.

Speaking on Peace FM, Kwesi Pratt blamed the authorities for the rampant strike actions that have charactirized the nation.

A couple of weeks ago, some teachers threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if their concerns regarding their salary scheme are not addressed by the appropriate authorities.

The teacher unions complained of inconsistencies in the payment of their car maintenance, payment of yearly incremental credit, promotion of teachers, retention premium and WAEC invigilation allowances.

With the Teacher unions heralding the strike actions, it became very alarming for both students and the entire nation.

The government together with the teachers held series of meetings to calm down the boiling waters and ensure that they resume work so as to help the students, particularly the final year students, go through their examinations successfully.

Though, the teachers after careful deliberations withheld their strike action; the University Teachers Association of Ghana and medical doctors in the public sector also rose demanding for some rectifications to be made in their salary schemes.

Kwesi Pratt speaking in relation to the numerous strikes in the nation, chided the State authorities for shirking their duties and therefore called on them to “sacrifice” in order to end the strike threats by public servants.’

To him, the leaders of the land should show by example the work they are doing to address the concerns of the teachers and the doctors.

“The leaders must show by example that we are in shambles and for that matter, we are all sacrificing. Until we do that, the strike will not be over. That’s the only way of making people aware that we are struggling to make it better.” he implored the authorities.

He also questioned the practices of the leaders in the country saying “everybody should sacrifice a bit. We don’t get a value for our gold, diamond and so on. Our money has depreciated. But as we are sacrificing, then you are sharing it among yourselves. Is it not provoking?”
