In memory of the May 9th disaster, the former Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Accra Hearts of Oak chairman, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to upgrade the clinics in the various stadia in the country to the level of a district hospital.
According to him, the stadia clinics should “be rehabilitated, brought up to the level of a district hospital so that if there is any disaster, they can be able” to give medical assistance to players and supporters.
He recounted that one of the main causes of the deaths at the Accra Sports Stadium during the match between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak was because the clinic was inundated by huge numbers of victims who could not receive quick medical treatment.
He also expressed disappointment in the security core at the stadium who to him, did a poor job in securing the lives of the supporters and further blamed the peacekeeping officers on the pitch on the day of the disaster for not handling the crowd well.
He therefore suggested that in order not to repeat a similar incident, the officers should undergo intensive training to manage well, a crowd attack in the stadiums.
He advised football administrators, clubs and supporters to be disciplined so as to avoid any unfortunate happenings during football matches.
The greatest threat in this country, he noted, is indiscipline and until something is done “we should forget about this country moving forward.”
12 years ago, the nation underwent one of the intense tragedies as several Ghanaian club supporters met their untimely death at the Accra Sports Stadium.
May 9, 2001 has gone into the historic books of Ghana as one of the dark days ever visited upon the Ghanaian citizenry.
