Samuel Ofosu Ampofo Questions GMA: On What Basis Are You Operating?

Former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu- Ampofo has sought clarification on the membership of the Ghana Medical Association.

He sought to find out the basis on which the Ghana Medical Association operates.

Hon. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, speaking to Radio Gold, asked why the Association would take a decision for public doctors in the country when majority of them are known to be working in private hospitals.

“The Ghana Medical Association, is it an association for doctors in government hospitals or it is an amalgamation of all doctors in the country coming together to form an association called Ghana Medical Association?” he questioned.

To him, government should have negotiated directly with the doctors and not the Association in its attempt to resolve the impasse.

Though admitting that the medical doctors’ concerns are legitimate, he was however of a strong view that they have not acted in a fair manner towards the nation.

According to him, the human lives lost in the strike cannot be retrieved even when the doctors’ demands are met and so, it would be appropriate for them to call off their industrial action.

He found it unfortunate that the doctors have not paid heed to pleas from government and the citizenry to rescind their decision and so, appealed to them to place the interest of the nation first before anything else.

“For me, I think it’s unfortunate. They haven’t been fair even though they will have legitimate cause to complain because when people have legitimate demand, they ought to pursue it. But I think that it is being stretched beyond limit of acceptability, especially in the current situation that we find ourselves.” he stated, advising the doctors to “go back to work whilst negotiation continues.”

He also raised eyebrows over the rationale behind the doctors’ strike, especially when it is determined by the Ghana Medical Association.

He wondered whether some “unseen hands” are manipulating the public workers to embark on the industrial actions.
