Samia
Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and
Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has come to the aid of her
brother, Sekou Nkrumah, volunteering information about his intention to reunite
with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
There
were reports in the media a couple of weeks ago regarding Sekou Nkrumah’s
intention to reunite with the NDC after abandoning it to support the 2012
Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo
Dankwa Akufo-Addo, prior to the general elections last year.
Sekou
Nkrumah until his break up with the ruling party was the Deputy Coordinator of
the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP).
Samia
Nkrumah, speaking in relation to her brother’s intent to rejoin the governing
party, told Radio Gold last Friday that his move is legitimate and in respect
of the country’s democratic principle, any person has freedom of association.
She
said her brother is a free person and expressed no surprise over the reports
that he may soon tie the knot with the NDC again.
According
to her, “everyone is free to join whatever party they want to. He’s a free
person. It is legitimate. This is a multiparty democracy and people are free to
join which other party they want to.”
To
her, Sekou has made his choice and therefore, she holds nothing against him for
leaving his father’s party behind to uphold the tenets of the NDC.
When
asked on Radio Gold’s newspaper review whether her brother would have been a
formidable force in the CPP, Samia Nkrumah expressed strongly that she has
“many brothers. All our membership, all committed members; they are brothers.
They are more than brothers. We don’t just need our biological brothers to join
us. We need all Ghanaians to believe in us. As many Ghanaians as possible to
believe in us and understand that we are going nowhere until we fulfill our
mission. And we are ready to serve. We are ready to serve this country.”
She
further recounted that her choice to settle with the CPP is intended to “revive
Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s vision through the political vehicle he founded
and we are happy to do so. And we are ready and prepared. We want to serve our
people. And we want to serve them with honesty and sincerity, and we have a lot
to offer.”
