The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku has debunked claims by the Agriculture Minister, Fifi Kwetey that the Mahama-led government has in a little over two years, outperformed ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor in terms of infrastructural development, eventhough the latter ruled the country for eight years.
Fifi Kwetey is reported to have asserted that Ghana under President Mahama has seen massive development as compared to the eight-long years Ex-President Kufour spent in government.
The Minister made these comments on Accra-based Radio Gold on Saturday.
Reacting to Fifi Kwetey's claims, Sammy Awuku told host of PeaceFM's "kOKROKOO" Nana Yaw Kesse that “it is only a lazy journalist who will say that President Mahama has spent two years at the Presidency.
"Was Dr. Omane Boamah not in government from 2009? Was Okudzeto Ablakwa not in government from 2009? Were they not in government? Or at that time, was it an independent government that was in power?” he further questioned.
Narrating some social interventions the erstwhile Kufour government put in place to safeguard the economy, the NPP National Youth Organizer recounted that the Kufour-led administration made remarkable changes in the energy sector which immensely inured to the benefits of Ghanaians.
He stated that the "NPP added a total of 560 megawatts under President Kufour before we left government. The VRA plant at Tema which was founded by government was 110 megawatts. Mines Reserve Plant, which was also founded by the Mines Company with support from the NPP government at that time added 80 megawatts of electricity…And then even emergency plant at Tema, also founded by government under President Kufour, was also 120 megawatts.
"This notwithstanding, with the support of government; we ably supported Asogli power plant by a private investor which added 200 megawatts” of electricity supply across the nation.
He also disclosed that the Ex-President Kufour commenced works on the Bui hydro dam, Aboadze Thermal and Kpong Thermal plants before the governing National Democratic Congress took over government. |
