Kwesi Pratt, Editor-in-Chief of the Insight newspaper, on Tuesday expressed some concern over the ongoing district Assembly elections.
Making his submissions on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Mr. Pratt wondered why the district Assembly elections cannot be run on partisan basis.
He urged political parties to be bold and openly "sponsor" their candidates to go for the elections, because he believes most of the contestants are aligned to some political parties.
Mr. Pratt does not see the logic in the political parties sponsoring Presidential and Parliamentary candidates during the general elections but won’t aid the district Assembly candidates to win in their respective districts.
“What’s wrong with parties sponsoring candidates? If we can sponsor candidates at Parliamentary level and sponsor candidates at the Presidential level, why can’t the parties sponsor candidates at the district level?” he asked.
According to him, should political parties declare their support for candidates contesting the district level elections; "it will help us all for the political parties who are hiding behind it will unveil their faces so that there will be a lot of interest in the district Assembly elections. A lot more people will participate in it…”
Mr. Pratt further expressed concerns over the disqualification of 70-year olds from the elections.
In his conviction, if 70-year olds are allowed to run for the Presidential slot in the country, then he expects the Electoral Commission (EC) to review its decision.
“There has to be some measure of consistency. The reason for disqualifying those who are 70, it must apply across board. If it’s not a correct reason too, it should not apply at any level."
