A
Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party has described
as “reckless” comments by the Eastern Regional chapter of the ruling
National Democratic Congress that the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs’
visit to the Office of the President a couple of days ago was
“politically sponsored.”
The NDC Regional Executives stated
firmly that the Chiefs were doing the bidding of the opposition New
Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Nana Akufo Addo who is challenging the
legitimacy of President John Mahama at the Supreme Court.
The
accusations were leveled shortly after the President of the Eastern
Regional House of Chiefs, Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, made a
call on all parties involved in the election petition case before the
Supreme Court, to accept the verdict irrespective of which party it
favours.
The Okyenhene made the appeal during the Chiefs’ meeting with the President at the Flagstaff House on Tuesday.
But the NDC Eastern Regional branch described the Okyenhene’s conduct as hypocritical.
Spokesperson
for the Regional Executives, who is also the Eastern Regional Organizer
of the NDC, was of the view that the Okyehene, as leader of the
Regional House of Chiefs, should have rather used the occasion to
condemn the decision by Nana Addo to contest the 2012 electoral results
in court “since he is a son of the land”.
The Regional Executives
also argued that the Okyenhene should have “also apologized on behalf
of some of his subordinates who actively involved themselves in
campaigning for certain candidates in the just ended elections” and some
Kyebi citizens who recently nearly prevented the President from
visiting the area.
But speaking on Peace FM’s morning show
“Kokrokoo” on Friday, John Boadu, a Deputy Communications Director of
the NPP, rubbished the comments by the Eastern Regional NDC Executives
saying they “intentionally vilified Okyehene.”
According to him,
the Regional Executives’ plot was intended to just agitate people to
react to the Okyehene’s call on the President. He stated
categorically that they (Eastern NDC branch) deliberately created
distortions about the message which was delivered by the Okyenhene
before President Mahama at the Flagstaff House.
“Because the NDC
[party] in the Eastern Region has intentionally twisted the words of the
Chief, if care is not taken it will elicit very very reckless comments
from people,” he said. |
