A
Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has
slammed the current administration led by President John Dramani Mahama
in unsavoury terms, labeling it a “Kume PreKo” government, due to the
recent price hikes in petroleum products in the country and the
frustrations some Ghanaians have been expressing over energy crisis
interrupting daily life and commerce.
Sammy Awuku insists the
Mahama-led “Kume PreKo” government has sought to aggravate the plight of
Ghanaians by shooting fuel prices up in spite of the fact that the less
privileged in society cannot make ends meet.
Whiles the Ghana
Water Company is rationing water in some parts of Accra due to
malfunctioning filters at its Weija Dam, the Electricity Company of
Ghana has also embarked on a load shedding exercise as a result of a
shortfall in the power supply.
As these are not unbearable
enough, government, through the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), over
the weekend, announced a 15% to 20% hike in the pricing of petroleum
products; Petrol, Kerosene, Diesel and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG)
despite intense calls to subsidize fuel in the country.
The fuel
price increments saw transport fares shoot up but critics fear the
impact will not only affect transportation, but also the prices of other
commodities as well. This they argue will disadvantage the poor in
society.
These factors, according to the NPP Communicator, does
indicate that the current administration is insensitive to the needs of
Ghanaians. To him, he will not be surprised should President Mahama’s
reign be recorded as the “shortest-lived” administration in the annals
of the Ghana’s political history.
Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo”
Morning Show, he called on Ghanaians to “resist” the fuel price
increases since he believes the increases will rather benefit the rich,
Ministers and cronies of the government in the country.
Describing
the upward adjustment in fuel price as “a dangerous path” that the
nation is plying, he admonished Ghanaians to advise themselves, saying
“this fuel increment should be resisted because the timing of it; it
raises question marks about government’s sensitivity. It is
insensitive.”
“I knew this government will not go anywhere. No
wonder it’s going to be the shortest-lived government in our history
because every policy they introduce is to further cripple the poor,” he
told host Kwame Sefa Kayi. |
