Spokesperson
for ex-Prez Kufuor, Frank Agyekum has said the former President was
happy upon hearing that the seat of government has been moved from the
Osu Castle to the Flagstaff House at Kanda.
Speaking in an
interview with Peace FM, Frank Agyekum reiterated the fact that Prez
Kufuor believes it was in the right direction for the current President
to move with his team.
“If it had been earlier, it would have been better; but better late than never,” he stated quoting ex-Prez Kufuor.
He
has also downplayed concerns by some critics in government who held a
notion that the President’s movement to the Flagstaff House may
compromise his safety due to the situation of the place.
Prior to
the 2008 elections, some members of the ruling National Democratic
Congress raised concerns about the cost and security of the edifice
which serves as the seat of government.
The critics were of the
view that should the late President Mills, then Presidential candidate
of the ruling NDC, move into the Presidential Palace; his protection
against external threats will be at stake.
But Frank Agyekum, in
an interview with Peace FM disclosed that a thorough work was done by
the Kufour government to beef up security at the Flagstaff House.
He cited among others, the establishment of a Police station and Hospital as some facilities at the premises.
Four years down the line, President John Mahama has finally occupied the abandoned seat of government.
Mr. Agyekum believes his boss has been vindicated following President Mahama’s relocation to the Flagstaff House.
He
affirmed the intention of the former NPP Flagbearer to be of national
interest than partisanship, therefore advising the ruling party to take
cue.
“When there’s an issue, we shouldn’t let it be for our
partisan interest…when there’s an issue concerning the country, let’s do
it in the interest of the nation and therefore think deeply. But not
just champion your partisan views, just because your party is in power.
That doesn’t bring development; it doesn’t promote democracy,” he urged.
He
stated that President Kufour and his team constructed the edifice to
benefit his successors and added that if the Presidency had been
relocated earlier, “it would have been better.”
He therefore urged the NDC to stop politicking about national issues. |
