Blame EC For Rejection Of Nov 7 Date - MP

Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, Member of Parliament for the Bosomtwe Constituency has described the Electoral Commission (EC) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as "anti-Ghana", claiming their behaviour towards the organizing of this year's elections is proof of their opposition to everything good.

Contributing on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Hon. Osei-Mensah wondered why the ruling NDC seems to be in bed with the EC, hence supporting all the electoral body's decisions.

According to him, Parliament's rejection of the proposal by the EC for the election date to be amended from December 7 to November 7 is as a result of the actions of the Commission.

He therefore expressed worry that any person would blame Parliamentarians for doing their duty.

To him, he and his colleagues deserve praise and not condemnation for their action in parliament Thursday.

He pointed out that the delays that the Commission exhibited in bringing the proposal before the Legislative House called for Thursday's shocking decision by the House, because the EC didn't provide the opportunity for the House to adequately exhaust the constitutional procedures.

The minority lawmakers voted to reject the constitutional amendment to move the voting date in Ghana from December 7 to first Monday in November.

They argued that although they wished to have the amendment taking place, they were under the impression that the changes will take effect from the next general elections in 2020.

Hon. Osei-Mensah wondered the NDC's penchant to back the EC no matter the issue under discussion.

Why is that everything the EC says sounds perfect to the NDC? Why? Why? Why is that if you don’t support EC, it means you’re anti-Ghana? Why? Is the EC a perfect institution in this country? Does the EC not make mistakes . . . Am I the person who made them adamant? Am I the one who told them to sit down and feel they’re above the law? Did I tell them to be lethargic?

To him, "If there’s any blame, people should go and blame the EC . . . They’re anti-Ghana . . . EC and NDC are the ones who are anti-Ghana.
