Environmentally Concerned Chiefs To Lead Demo Against Felling Of Aburi Gardens Trees

Some Chiefs may soon embark on series of demonstrations to register their displeasure over recent happenings at the Aburi Botanical Gardens.

The Aburi Botanical Gardens has for weeks now, caught media attention as the general public keenly scrutinizes the activities on the lands at the forest reserve.

Residents at Aburi have accused the Chief Executive of the Assembly, Kwadwo Afari-Gyan of felling trees within the Gardens to construct an Assembly Complex.

His action has since courted controversy and the residents have kept calling on the appropriate State authorities to intervene on their behalf and stop the Assembly from constructing any edifice on the land.

Adding his voice to the numerous calls on government to halt the cutting down of trees within the forest reserve, the President of Environmentally Concerned Association of Ghana and Omanhene of Twifo-Agona in the Central Region, Nana Benchi Awuah II appealed to the Chief of Aburi, Otoobour Djan Kwasi II not to lend any form of support to the intended project.

According to him, the forest reserve is useful to Ghanaians and should not be undermined under his (Otoobour Djan Kwasi II) watch.

He emphasized the importance of trees within the Gardens, saying the forest reserve has become a historical public monument and for that matter, the cutting down of trees in the area will not augur well for the place.

Nana Benchi Awuah II pleaded with the Aburihene, stressing that "Aburi is a large place and so, it would be better for him (the Aburihene) to find a different place and therefore create and develop the area to make it part of Aburi.”

He told host of PeaceFm’s “Kokrokoo”, Kwami Sefa-Kayi, that his outfit will petition President John Mahama to preserve the Gardens but any attempt to fell any more trees will call for the wrath of concerned Chiefs in the nation who will vehemently demonstrate against the move by the custodians of the Aburi land.
