Minister
of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Nayon Bilijo has debunked
claims that fishermen in the country have been engaging in pair
trawling.
According to the sector Minister, there is no proof
that pair trawling has been existing in fishing sites in the nation but
however explained that there have rather been incidents of illegal
fishing vessels at inshore zones.
Speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Hon. Nayon Bilijo called for proof of any pair trawling activity being carried out by fisher folks in the country.
“I
want one single evidence of pair trawling taking place. We have heard
stories about pair trawling but we go out there and do not see (anything
of such sort) since pair trawling has been banned; we’ve not seen one
single incident or evidence of pair trawling.
“I’ve come to the
conclusion that when people see a trawler, a fishing vessel; a trawler
coming into the inshore exclusive zone fishing. Then they use the term
‘pair trawling’,” he said.
He further pledged his Ministry's commitment to combat any illegal activity in the fishing sector.
“We have worked on it to drastically reduce if not eliminate it...” he said. |
