Professor Kofi Agyekum, Head of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Ghana has appealed to the striking doctors to rescind their decision and resume work.
Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Professor Agyekum noted that though the doctors have shared their concerns over their conditions of service, it would not help patients in the country.
According to him, no amount of effort can revive patients who have already died as a result of the doctors' nationwide strike.
He told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that the doctors should reconsider the lives of the patients that death may claim if they continue to withdraw their services due to the government's failure to reach a consensus with them over their conditions of service.
Addressing the doctors' strike, Professor Agyekum figuratively went on his knees to plead with the striking medical doctors.
“Our knees are on the ground; they should think about the nation and our financial issues and resume work. I plead with them. My knees are on the ground.”
He also advised President John Mahama to be wary of his utterances, particularly in the wake of the doctors' strike action in order not to inflame passions.
He noted that the President's adamant indication that government may not concede to the demands of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) over their conditions of service will not help resolve the conflict. |
