NDC Communications Director, Fred Agbenyo, has called for the training of more doctors to supplement the number of medical doctors in the public sector.
Contributing to Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Fred Agbenyo stressed the need for Tertiary institutions to incorporate Science-related courses in their curricular to open avenues for Ghanaians.
According to him, the recent number of doctors in the country stands at less than 3000 and this therefore, in his view, raises concerns.
This is because the number of doctors cannot correspond with the total population of the country which is pegged at approximately 25 million.
“We must open the avenue to train more people because we cannot stay in this country per the last population census, almost 25 million people and we’re told that all doctors in this country are less than 3000. That was even 2010 population…”
Touching on the doctors' decision to call off the strike and resume work which begun yesterday, Fred Agbenyo commended the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) for such decision but however quizzed them about the lives that were lost in the process of their strike action.
He sought to find out how the doctors would compensate the families that lost their loved ones during the period of the strike action.
He further advised the doctors not to hop onto the media to make comments about their negotiation with the government.
To him, the doctors should keep it indoors and not set the platform for political commentators when they reach a consensus with the government over their conditions of service.
"If they don’t want us to comment on it or share our views, they shouldn’t come on radio or TV to discuss it when they finish their negotiations. It’s supposed to be an indoor issue. They should discuss indoor. We’re not supposed to know whatever they’re entitled to.”
