We Need National ID Cards...That's The Only Solution To The EC Problems - Kwesi Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to issue national identification cards to Ghanaians.

Speaking on 'Kokrokoo' on Peace FM, Kwesi Pratt believes Ghana's electoral problems stem from the fact that there are no operational national ID cards.

It can be recalled that the Government of Ghana in conjunction with the National Identification Authority years ago introduced the national ID Cards system.

But this system became defunct after the authority failed to issue the cards to the registered individuals.

There have also been heated arguments among political parties in the country for a new voters' register, following the 2012 general elections.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) wants the current register completely changed for a new one while the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) argues that the EC should only clean the current register to rid it of the alleged minors and foreigners in the register.

In view of this, the EC held a two-day forum to discuss the way forward on the voters' register.

Addressing the issue, Mr. Pratt was optimistic the electoral challenges will be extremely minimized should the ID Cards become operational in the nation.

“We all know that what PPP is saying is the truth. That’s the national ID. One solution forever, permanent…Everybody knows that the final solution is one voters’ ID card for everything; national ID card for everything for all time. Why don’t we all agree to seek a way to do the national identification card?”

“That is the final solution. That is the ultimate solution to this problem," he said.
