If Mahama Is Prez Whiles On A Trip Overseas, Why Should We've Another Prez Sitting In Accra?

Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Manging Editor of the Insight newspaper, has condemned the culture where a Speaker of Parliament is sworn-in as Head of State whenever the President and his Vice are both out of town on official duties outside the country.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Kwesi Pratt told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that such practice should be prevented.

According to him, if the government does not discontinue such practice, it may have dire consequences on the nation in the near future.

In the absence of President John Dramani Mahama and his Vice Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur who travelled outside the country on official assignment, the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, was asked to act as President of the Republic in their stead.

But the swearing-in of the Speaker of Parliament has since taken centre stage of discussions as some critics believe it may not augur well for the country.

Reacting to the issue, Kwesi Pratt called for a review of the constitutional provision.

“You cannot have two Presidents at the same time. At all times, there’s only one President. So, if President John Dramani Mahama goes to Burkina Faso, who is he? President! So, why do you have another President sitting in Accra?

“You cannot swear in a President when somebody else is acting as President outside the country.”

He therefore sought clarity on the matter, stressing that "we should go to the Supreme Court and get clarity on this matter once and for all.”
