Former MP Tells Police: Don’t Shoot To Kill Armed Robbers

Armed Robbery has over the years been an albatross and threat to national development.

Consequently, people who engage in such vice are deemed criminal and usually locked up in cells to serve as deterrent to other potential culprits.

But recent trend in the nation is either to find or hear reports that Police have shot dead people suspected to have committed robbery or exchanged fire with robbers resulting in their death.

Despite the commendation given to the Ghana Police Service for gunning down suspected enemies of the State, former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano constituency, Hon. Stephen Balado Manu, believes it is about time the Service review its confrontations with robbers.

Speaking on Oman FM on Wednesday, the former MP was very critical of the attempt by the Police force to clamp down on armed robbery by shooting-to-kill and wants them to adopt a new approach.

According to him, instead of the ‘shoot to kill’ approach by the Police, they should rather act in a professional manner by directing their gunshots to parts of the robbers’ body which will not lead to their death.

He explained that often-times, the Police are quick to fire at armed robbers, but warned that “they may be innocent people. Until the law proves them guilty, they are innocent even when they have been arrested.”

He therefore suggested that they shoot to incapacitate the robbers in order to apprehend them.
