Deputy Education Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reinforced the need for teachers in the country to be sanctioned if they misconduct themselves.
Following orders by the sector Minister, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, that teachers who absent themselves from duty for 10 days or more should vacate their post; the Deputy Education Minister is of a strong view that the directives will help to instill discipline.
According to him, it is prudent for teachers to be expelled when they do not comport themselves.
He revealed that the sector minister will soon be paying surprise visits to various schools in the nation in order to penalize the recalcitrant ones who tend to defy the code of ethics.
“Her concern is that the code has been there…And then we have seen that the code is being violated, there are clear sanctions and yet the sanctions don’t apply. So, she has served notice. The stakeholders have promised support that they will support her in making sure that these sanctions apply,” he stated.
During an interview on Radio Gold, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa also indicated that the Minister has directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to put in place measures to track the activities of teachers nationwide.
He expressed worry over Ghana’s appalling Educational performance on international platforms and expressed approval of the sector minister’s decision to urge the GES Director General including the management of GES that there is the need to “put in place adequate checks and balances. So, aside district supervisors who might do their work, let us have mechanisms of supervising or monitoring surprise visits so that we will know whether really they are doing their work.”
Meanwhile, some teachers in the Volta Region have been sanctioned for violating the code of ethics.
