Managing
Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt has jabbed government and
management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for proposing to
increase levies on water distribution and electricity supply.
According to the outspoken journalist, all successive governments seem to toy with Ghanaians.
Reacting
to the recent proposals by the major stakeholders in the energy and
water sectors for an increment in tariffs, Mr. Pratt did not mince words
when he described Ghanaian governments as ‘lazy’ and always bracing
themselves for the easy options.
To him, successive governments have not tried hard enough to resolve the situation.
“All
governments know what we can do to help ourselves. To be innovative and
creative, it’s a more difficult thing and our governments have tended
to be very lazy. That’s our problem, always going for the lazy, easy
option.” he said on Peace FM today.
He also chided the
Electricity Company of Ghana for making such appeals for increment,
wondering whether they even pay bills on the utilities.
“Let’s
ask them whether they pay light bill. So, you want us to pay realistic
prices but you pay nothing at all?” he rhetorically asked.
He was of a strong view that the Company has only been pulling the wool over the eyes of Ghanaians.
He
therefore averred that the Company should desist from making such
demands for tariff increments because “every day, you tell us that
increasing it will give us relief. For about 30 years now, we’ve
increased it but the system doesn’t improve. Every time you convince us
that the increment will not be much and that we are increasing it to
repair machines. We have increased it all the time but still, why?” |
