GMA Leaders Must Respect Rights of NDC Activists...They Also Have Their Freedom of Speech - Deputy Communications Minister

Deputy Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has called on the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to tolerate views that dissent to their decisions.

Speaking on "Alhaji and Alhaji" on Radio Gold, Felix Kwakye Ofosu bemoaned the seemingly intolerant character of the leadership of the Association towards the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Activists.

According to him, Ghana's constitution gives every person the freedom of speech and so, the GMA leaders and their members should not gag NDC Activists who object to their decisions or oppose their "illegal" strike action.

“I was completely astonished when I heard members of the opposition and their usual if you like surrogates in the media insist that the President must withdraw his statements and apologize for it. The same people who have not found it necessary to censure Frank Serebour for the vulgar language that he used on radio think that the President who has stated a position that is in the interest of the generality of our people."

He stated emphatically that "it smacks of disrespect" and "creates the impression that none of us have our thinking faculties working properly."

To him; “People must be granted their rights. They don’t lose their rights to speak merely because they associate with political parties and they don’t lose their stake in the affairs of this nation as taxpayers merely because they associate with political parties.”

Expressing varying views about the striking doctors, he asserted "cannot be the reason why anybody should strike in this country because our constitution guarantees freedom of speech. The same constitution that makes it possible for Justice Siaw and his colleagues, the President of the GMA to criticize government harshly also guarantees the right of political activists to disagree with the position of the Ghana Medical Association.”
