Is The Voters' Register Micro Finance Or Money Transfer Zone? - Sammy Awuku Quizzes Akua Donkor

The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku, has pilloried the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) over comments she made on the voters' register.

Delivering her speech at the Electoral Commission (EC) forum on the voters' register, Madam Akua Donkor claimed the alleged minors by the NPP do not acquire voters ID card to vote during elections.

According to her, the minors register to have the ID cards in order to retrieve transfers from their family.

“In this world, you cannot trust anyone with money, not even your family so the children see the registration as an opportunity to get an ID card just to receive remittances from their parents abroad," she told the gathering.

But it appears Akua Donkor's comments didn't sink down well with the NPP as Sammy Awuku lambasted her for trivializing the issues.

Speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Sammy Awuku noted that the forum was meant for serious national exercise and so, Akua Donkor's comments somehow left the platform to ridicule.

“You really believe that when we’re doing a serious national exercise to find ways to rectify our voters register, then you create an opportunity for this woman to say that we should allow minors to vote because their mothers will transfer money to them in the future. Is it (the voters register) a micro finance or money transfer zone?”

To him, "some things are there that we can afford to joke with it but the time comes when, as a country, we need to sit back and reflect. Then ask ourselves whether the path we have chosen is the best. The NPP has been clear on this matter.”
