No-one Should Be Held Accountable?...Then We're Living In A "President-less" Country - Atik

Aspiring General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC), Atik Mohammed says the blame games over the recent gas explosion at Circle must continue till the Government of Ghana acts accordingly.

Atik Mohammed told host Kwami Sefa  on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme that Ghanaians cannot stop blaming city authorities and the government for the loss of several lives in the June 3 twin disaster that occurred at the GOIL fuel station at Circle.

According to him, Ghanaians pay taxes and therefore "disagrees with vehemence the assertion by the president that we should end the blame game."

Which blame game is he asking us to end? He is responsible and I dare say that the deaths of those people are on his hands,” he said on PeaceFM's "Kokrokoo" Morning Show.

His remark was in reference to a plea by President John Dramani Mahama that Ghanaians must put a stop to the blame game in the wake of the torrential and devastating floods that hit Accra a week ago.

The double disaster claimed about 152 lives and destroyed properties worth millions of cedis last Wednesday.

The devastating inferno cum massive flooding followed hours of prolonged downpour that led to power outages in several communities. A large number of the victims were believed to be taking shelter at a fuel station in Accra to escape the downpour when an explosion occurred.

Speaking at a memorial service held for the perished souls, the President Mahama asked that public discussions should not be centred on what other governments did not do saying though there is “plenty of blame to go around” the country should collectively seek ways to prevent future occurrence and focus on "what this government must do, for which we shall".

But the PNC Policy Analyst sharply disagrees.

He held strongly that "somebody must take responsibility, someone must be held accountable".

They wait and when their inaction turns into a huge disaster then you find them in their best attires, taking selfies and groupies with the ‘pretense’ of showing concern and to mourn. Then the president will say “never again...The president and his appointees’ refusal to act is the reason this has happened...they (President and his appointees) are sleeping on the job as though the country is on cruise control, autopilot no one seems to be in control”.

All we get in return is the loss of lives. All we get in return is the people enjoying our taxes and not doing the work. Then when we talk, they say we should stop the blame game; meaning these people would have died for nothing? No justice would be served? If we say we should stop the blame game, if one person is not owning up to this, then what are talking about?

We have a government in this country. Ghanaians have lost their lives and we don’t find it relevant? We don’t find it a priority that somebody will be asked to account for what happened? Then what kind of country are we living in? Then this would have been a Presidential-less or President-less country or a leaderless country," he fumed.
