Armed robbers kill businessman, injure others

Seven suspected armed robbers killed a businessman and caused serious injuries to two other persons after attacking two vehicles at Esuoahyiam, near Samreboi, in the Western Region last Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Raymond Ofori, while the names of the injured have been given as Hawa Abdulai and Eric Koffie.

The robbers attacked a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus, with registration number AS 7132-Y, and a Toyota Highlander, with registration number GR 5737 -12, about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Tarkwa District Crime Officer David Gyabaa, who confirmed the story to the Ghana News Agency, said that while Ms Abdulai had been treated and discharged, Mr Koffie, who sustained a gunshot wound on the shoulder, was receiving treatment at the Asankragwa Hospital.

He said the MMT bus was travelling from Samreboi towards Kumasi, while the Toyota Highlander, which was being driven by Ofori, was travelling to Accra.

Mr Gyabaa said on reaching Esuoahyiam, about five kilometres from Samreboi, the passengers in the two vehicles observed that the road was blocked.

According to him, three masked armed men and four others wielding machetes emerged from the nearby bush to attack the occupants of both vehicles and robbed them of unspecified amounts of money and mobile phones.

Mr Gyabaa said Ofori died instantly from a bullet shot by the robbers, while two passengers on the MMT bus sustained injuries.

No arrests have been made so far.

The body of the businessman has been deposited at the Asankragwa Hospital morgue for autopsy.
