On Your Mark, Get Set, Go – NPP or NDC

It’s a make or break for the main opposition New Patriotic Party as it counts its hope on the Supreme Court to give a fair verdict on the law suit the party has filed against the National Democratic Congress and the Electoral Commission.

One could expect the best or the worse for his party in any direction the court’s decision goes at the end of the day.

The Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo may have just one chance to ascend to the Presidential throne; a chance he would not let slip him by especially when he has made a genuine plea to Ghanaians to entrust their confidence in him for their freedom from any entanglement.

But it seems his Presidential dreams sit on the fence as he may have just one last chance to sail through the storms, though that only depends on the Supreme Court now.

Friday, December 28, 2012 begins the real battle of the titans.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will address their case in the law court to challenge the electoral results in the 2012 Presidential elections.

The party has since December 8 this year challenged the Electoral Commission and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the accuracy of the electoral figures which pushed the ruling party on top of the Presidential ladder.

NPP bigwigs and supporters claim there were some inaccuracies during the December polls and therefore accused the governing party and the Electoral Commission of electoral fraud.

They argue that the Electoral Commission and the NDC have interlocked to rig the elections.

Incumbent President John Dramani Mahama was declared victor in the elections by the EC Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan despite the NPP’s attempt to halt the declaration.

He polled 5,574,761 votes representing 50.70% while the NPP 2012 Presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo took the second position with 5,248,898 votes representing 47.74%.

The NPP legal team are optimistic the evidence gathered by the party will vindicate them, consequently to nullify the authenticity of President John Mahama as the next Head of the Armed Forces and President of the next administration in 2013.

The NDC on the other hand say the NPP scholars were not smart and vigilant enough to detect the alleged inconsistencies in the electoral figures.

To them, the Electoral Commission did the right thing proclaiming President John Mahama victor in the elections.

They have vehemently downplayed the opposition party’s claims of electoral fraud in the polls.

The joy of the National Democratic Congress may be complete at the moment as they crown it with a joyous street carnival at Osu on Wednesday, December 26 to honour the President-elect John Mahama and also celebrate the victory of the party.

But what if the NPP indeed has a genuine case and concern, what happens next?

It surely will be of the same value should nothing fruitful is achieved out of the law suit but can one indeed rule out anything because until the court makes a final verdict, no one can indeed know who the cup really fits.

Many Ghanaians are on the tenterhooks, awaiting the outcome of the court case.

Friday will be just as they say in athletics, “On your mark, Get set, Go”.

Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, EC Chairman, has done his part; now, the Judiciary will be the final arbitrator.
