Former
President Rawlings, a couple of days ago, lambasted his successor,
former President John Agyekum Kufour, over some practices, which to him,
were undertaken to the detriment of Ghanaians.
Speaking as the
Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony of the Regional camp of the
International Youth Fellowship at the Adidome Senior High School in the
Volta Region, Mr. Rawlings described his successor as an "autocratic
thief."
“When people get up, they wanna create the impression to
you the young ones as if the corruption started with this man, the young
man, John Mahama. No, it started with Kufuor and that’s why I said
Kufuor was an autocratic thief”, he told the students.
He further
swore never to stop reminding the nation of the alleged corrupt
character of former President Kufour as well as the manner in which he
plundered State assets while in office.
“People keep saying that I
should keep quiet on Kufuor. The day I keep quiet on Kufuor, his image
will become white-washed and he will use that stolen corrupt wealth to
determine the political destiny of this country. I will not. All I have
is my integrity”, he blurted out.
Several critics and
socio-economic commentators have also responded to his accusations with
the main opposition party issuing a statement to caution him.
The
opposition New Patriotic Party lashed out at him for “deliberately and
unruly casting unjustified insinuations and insults” on former rulers of
the country, especially Ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Expressing
their resentment at the "constant insults and attacks" on the
personality of Mr. Kufour, the NPP Chair sought to remind Ex-President
Rawlings of his duty as a Statesman.
He said; “we find it highly
unbecoming, mischievous and provocative that Mr. Rawlings, a former
military leader, later head of state, who should naturally be wearing
the shoes of statesmanship….Mr Rawlings behaves and talks like an angel
and a judge of humanity when his 19year rule was inundated with
atrocities and unbeatably dark days in the history of our country.
Also, addressing the issue on Oman FM's political analysis programme “National Agenda”,
the former Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Jumah,
called on the nation not to pay any attention to the comments made by
the former President.
According to him, it is prudent for Ghanaians to ignore his (Mr. Rawlings) remarks and treat it with disdain.
Expounding
further, he was of a strong view that such comments do not carry value
and so, do not deserve to be broached as a matter of issue.
He however admonished Mr. Rawlings to behave as a Statesman and imitate the character of a 'unifier'.
“Next
time, when a Secondary School invites him; he shouldn’t go. He should
rather send Kofi Adams (his Spokesperson). He should remain in his
room,” Hon. Kofi Jumah opined. |
