A
member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Eric Ametor
Quarmyne has appealed to the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to cooperate
with government as it initiates policies to advance the progress of the
economy.
Mr. Ametor Quarmyne, who also doubles as Communications
Consultant to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), called on
the TUC to rescind its ultimatum to government to institute living wages
for workers or otherwise face their wrath.
The TUC reiterated
the need for government to pay realistic living wages to workers in the
country to alleviate the economic hardships they face.
Members of
the Congress made the call during proceedings held at Bolgatanga over
the weekend to precede this year's May Day celebration.
Discussing the issue on U TV's “Adekye Nsroma”,
Mr. Ametor Quarmyne implored the TUC to consider the economic pressures
confronting the nation and ensure that they build consensus with
government. According to him, though the demands of TUC might be in
order, the members should however not turn a blind eye to the financial
constraints on government. To him, the current administration
has been constrained financially and in other sectors of the economy but
is striving to put strategic measures in place to salvage the country.
And
one of the measures, he stated, is cutting down on expenses which
includes the steps the government is maximizing to check wages paid to
workers.
Mr. Ametor Quarmyne also ascribed the current economic situation to inflationary challenges on the country.
He
expounded that the high inflation rate that hit the economy slowed down
progress, and in government's bid to enhance development, the current
administration had to take certain difficult steps to save the economy.
He therefore urged the TUC to confer with the government to find a
peaceful resolution.
