We Need A Mindset Change Towards Road Safety - MP

Member of Parliament for Bantama, Hon. Kwabena Kokofu has called on leaders and politicians in the country to lead a crusade against reckless driving on the roads in order to prevent road accidents in the country.

Road accidents have become rampant in the nation and contribute to woes of the Ghanaian citizenry. Going by available statistics from especially the Ghana Police Service Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), road crashes keep rising each passing day.

Most of the accidents have been attributed to careless driving, over speeding, overloading, licence racketeering network of officials at the DVLA and some deviants who issue licences to unqualified individuals for the personal monetary gain of those officials and deviants, poor construction of roads among other factors.

An aspiring General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and his entourage were on Tuesday, April 8 involved in a near-fatal accident on their way to Kumasi.

The vehicle in which the aspirant was travelling was said to have somersaulted several times after the driver reportedly lost control on the wet road surface.

Mr. Agyepong and three others including his aide, Davis Opoku however escaped albeit with some injuries.

Noting down the consequences of driving carelessly on the roads, Hon. Kokofu, contributing to a panel discussion on U TV’s "Adekye Nsroma" Morning Show, advised vehicle drivers not to engage in any bad practices that may cause accidents. He admonished them not to "drink and drive" simultaneously because such bad habit is a threat to their own safety and passengers as well.

“We need to change our mentality. We need to change our mindset; our attitude. It behoves us all," he advised.
