Felix
Kwakye Ofosu, Deputy Information Minister, has expressed support for
the Conduct of Public Officers bill which was proposed by President John
Dramani Mahama, stating that the bill will help combat corruption in
the public service sector.
In July this year, President John
Mahama launched the Conduct of Public Officers bill to govern the
operations of public service workers in order to avert the corruptible
practices that have since characterized the sector.
The bill which has received cabinet approval is seen to be timely as the nation takes steps to nip corruption in the bud.
Speaking
in an interview with Radio Gold on Wednesday, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu
explained that the bill would steer the activities of public servants so
that they discharge their duties effectively.
According to him,
it is to strengthen the constitutional provision which spells out the
conduct of the public servants and therefore give legal backing to the
provision.
It will ensure that “their personal interests do not conflict with the performance of their function,” he stated.
The
bill, he further expounded, “touches on access declaration. It touches
on even sexual harassment. It touches on punishment” for the sector
workers who violate it.
“So, the public officer is made aware of
the do(s) and don’ts of the office, of what constitutes or does not
constitute conflict of interest. For instance; of what he needs to do in
order to discharge his duties in a manner that ensure that his personal
interest does not conflict with the functions of his office.” |
