A
leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Sarpong has lashed
out at the management of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for
incurring debt after the Supreme Court ruling the election dispute
between the leaders of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the
Electoral Commission (EC).
He found it outrageous that the State-owned company could run into debt, by simply telecasting live the court proceedings.
One
can recall that the State broadcaster, GTV, was given the nod to
telecast live the election petition proceedings at the Supreme Court
during the petition in which President John Mahama was declared “validly
elected” by the nine Judges.
The management of the State
broadcaster claimed the live coverage cost them GHC 3.5 million. The
amount covered the operational cost for the period April 4, 2013 to
August 29, 2013.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Gold on
Wednesday, Kwabena Sarpong stated that the management should be
dismissed for their ineptitude.
According to him, GBC should have accrued lots of profits during the petition due to the wide viewership of the case.
He
explained that the State broadcaster could have reaped its benefits
from advertising companies but since the management is incompetent, they
run into losses.
To him, they "didn't know how to make money" and only exhibited "complete incompetence in managing."
He therefore questioned their logic for making such losses when the live telecast caught about "40% of viewing public that time"
"Where was the advert? Is GBC trying to say they never had adverts?” he asked.
