Kufuor’s Role In NPP As A Figure Head Can’t Be Undermined Or Underestimated – Karbo Tells Mornah

President J.A Kufour
The opposition New Patriotic Party has repudiated comments by Bernard Mornah, General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC) that Ex-President John Agyekum Kufour's decision to abstain from voting in Sunday's Special Delegates Congress was not a mark of a good leader.

Contributing to Peace FM's political analysis programme on Tuesday, Bernard Mornah questioned the rationale behind Mr Kufour's decision not to vote at this year's Super Delegates Conference.

Though Spokesperson for the former President, Frank Agyekum has explained that his (Kufour’s) refusal to participate in the process was to help him remain neutral, Bernard Mornah believed the President did not show good leadership.

Frank Agyekum indicated that the ex-president’s action was to preserve his status as an elder in the party.

“…even though he is part of the process he will not be voting because he sees himself as a statesman on both national and party affairs...the former president has given his express condi-tion that he supports whoever emerges as the winner from the Special Delegates Conference as well as during the National Delegates Conference in October so he wants to put that into practice,” he said.

However, the PNC General Secretary believes the former President’s must "show leadership not statesmanship."

To him, many people in the party are holding back because they do not know the real stance of Mr Kufuor, whose failure to choose a preferred candidate, he adds, will mar any future opportunities he may have to question the party if things go wrong with the candidate chosen.

But in a quick riposte on the same platform, Anthony Abayifa Karbo, dismissed his (Mornah’s) assertions stressing that ex-president Kufour has maintained his reputation in the party by refusing to participate in the congress.

According to him, President Kufour abstained from the voting process in order to give leverage to all the contestants.

To him, the former President's decision is a step in the right direction because it will help unite the party and curb the bickering and internal strife within the NPP.

Speaking on Peace FM’s "Kokrokoo", Karbo said “he (President Kufour) has given an indication of his future role in the party. When all this rumpus was going on in the party, he met with the Executives. His role in the party today as a figure head cannot be underestimated. We, the youth in the party, respect him a lot," he said.
