Hopeson
Adorye, a member of a youth wing of the New Patriotic Party dubbed
"Young Patriots" has expressed gratitude to the nine-member panel
sitting on the pending election petition for tempering justice with
mercy.
Hopeson, was summoned by the Justices presided by Justice
William Atuguba, in a joint letter signed by the Registrar of the
Supreme Court, Mr James Mensah, to appear before the court on Wednesday,
August 14, 2013, for contempt charges.
He, together with the
General Secretary of the NPP, Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, appeared
before the Supreme Court Judges on Wednesday to defend "why they should
not be committed to prison" for comments aimed at "defying and lowering
the authority" of the court and also for "scandalising the court."
After
hearing pleadings for leniency from their counsel, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, a
former Attorney-General during the administration of ex-President
Kufuor, the court decided not to impose any custodial sentences on the
two NPP gurus.
They were however fined GHC 5000 and GHC 2000
respectively, and are to also sign a bond to be of good character for
six and three months or in default serve six or three months
imprisonment correspondingly.
As a symbol of appreciation, Hopeson Adorye wrote on his facebook wall immediately after the ruling thanking the Justices.
"To God be the glory, I thank you all for your prayers and support including the Judges," he posted on his facebook wall. |
