Executive
Director of the Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has hailed
Ken Kuranchie for charting a new course for Ghana’s democracy.
Gabby,
showered praises on the Daily Searchlight editor who recently was found
guilty of contempt against the Supreme Court and jailed for 10 days,
claiming that he (Ken Kuranchie) presented himself as a living sacrifice
for the peace of the nation.
Though fearing to make any
contemptuous comments against the court, Otchere-Darko advised critics
who have since been lambasting Counsel for Ken Kuranchie during his
trial, Atta Akyea, to note that Ken’s incarceration was not caused by
the Counsel, since the nine-member panel supposedly had planned to set
Ken as a scape goat.
The DI was commenting on the comparison
being drawn between Lawyer Atta Akyea and former Attorney General under
the erstwhile President Kufour administration, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, by some
people on the performance of their legal representation.
Lawyer
Nii Ayikoi Otoo on Wednesday pleaded with the court to temper justice
with mercy when his clients, General Secretary of the New Patriotic
Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie and a member of the ‘Young Patriots’, a
wing of the party, Hopeson Adorye, were dragged before the nine judges
sitting on pending election petition to prove their innocence or
otherwise of contempt charges filed against them.
Using all legal
tactics available to him, Lawyer Ayikoi Otoo managed to win the
sympathy of the judges who only slapped a fine of 7000 cedis on the two
NPP gurus.
The two were also asked to sign a bond to be of good
character for six or three months respectively and any default on their
part will end them in jail for six or three months.
Following the
ruling, some people sought to pitch the performance of Lawyer Ayikoi
Otoo against the Counsel for Ken Kuranchie but speaking on Oman FM
today, Asare Otchere-Darko stressed that “Ayikoi Otoo was the right
person for the right time. Atta Akyea and Ken Kuranchie for the right
occasion to send a strong signal to the country…Ken Kuranchie sacrificed
for the peace of this country.
“Atta Akyea and Ken Kuranchie went with a strategy that worked for the peace and stability of this country.” |
