A
leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has
discounted grapevine reports that the party’s General Secretary, Kwadwo
Owusu Afriyie, would be ousted from his position following his baptism
of fire at the Supreme Court last week.
Paul Afoko, speaking on
Radio Gold, expressed his disagreement with some members of the party
who have proposed for the resignation of the NPP Chief Scribe.
According
to him, Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, known in political circles as Sir
John, deserves the benefit of the doubt and so, advised the party
leadership and members not to jump their gun by expelling him from his
post.
To him, Sir John should rather make amends with the party
and believed he will turn a new leaf by virtue of him being arraigned
before the highest court of the land and taken through several rounds of
queries by the nine-member panel sitting on the pending election case.
“From
now on, whatever he does will be to enhance the image of the party…I
will not call for his resignation…I leave that decision to him and to
the party,” Paul Afoko said.
He also blamed both the NPP and the
ruling National Democratic Congress for the court ruling against Sir
John, saying the two major political parties “succeeded in pushing each
other…in trying to outdo each other in terms of who can throw most lines
and that has culminated into unfortunate position of having our General
Secretary put in the dock.”
Meanwhile, there are reports in the
media that Mr. Paul Afoko, “(former President) Kufour loyalist, is being
prepared for the position of General Secretary to take over from Sir
John who many believe has turned the party into a laughing stock”, as
published in the Monday edition of the Daily Post newspaper.
