NPP to sanction Communications Director for contravening the party’s position

The New Patriotic Party’s Executives in the Brong Ahafo Region have registered their displeasure at the posture of the party’s Communications Director in Tain, Charles Akuoku Tuffour, on the NPP’s legal battle with the Electoral Commission and President John Dramani Mahama.

The Executives are expected to mete out sanctions to the Communications Director over what they say is a betrayal of trust.

Mr. Chales Akuoku Tuffour speaking to Adom FM on Wednesday questioned the possibility of the NPP winning their case at the Supreme Court.

The NPP’s Presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, Vice Presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the party’s National Chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, have filed a suit against the Electoral Commission and President John Mahama over what they say is an electoral fraud perpetrated by the accused.

The party has accused the EC and the ruling National Democratic Congress of rigging the elections to clinch victory for the President in the December 7, 2012 polls.

The President was declared victor in the Presidential elections but the NPP under the leadership of Nana Addo has petitioned the Supreme Court, challenging the electoral results in hope that the court overturns the declaration of President John Mahama as the fourth President under the fourth Republic.

President Mahama was inaugurated to serve a second term in office on January 7, 2013 but the NPP seeks to annul his Presidential legitimacy.

The plaintiffs; Nana Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Jake Obetsebi Lamptey in their petition to the highest court of the land brought charges against President John Mahama and the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, who are respondents to the case.

But Mr. Akuoku Tuffour says the party should focus on way forward to strengthen their support base for victory in 2016 since according to him,  the petition only suits  “some two or three persons in the party.”

He explained that the decision by the party to pursue justice in the court is not in the interest of the majority.

Meanwhile, the Brong Ahafo Regional executives have bemoaned the comments by the Communications Director, saying they are in contravention of the party’s position.

Regional Secretary of the party, Alfred Ofori Annye disclosed on Joy FM that appropriate sanctions will be proposed during a meeting with the executives today.

“His action amounts to betrayal since the party met over the issue before finally deciding on the option of going to the Supreme Court to challenge the results,” he indicated.
